Spareroom.co.uk has reported that number of households looking to take in a lodger rose by 27%, from 1,955 to 2,487, during the first two weeks of 2010. A total of 65% of respondents in a survey by the website said they were overstretched financially and that the cost of Christmas had forced them to take action
